Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly oil an oven-safe skillet or cast-iron pan.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into 6 to 8 oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.
Browning and Gravy Preparation
- Heat the skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side until a crust forms. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onion. Sauté until soft and translucent, about 6 to 8 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir continuously for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping the bottom. Stir in the cream and garlic powder. Simmer until thickened.
Baking
- Nestle the browned patties back into the gravy, cover, and transfer to the oven. Bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
