Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye), thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce for marinade
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce optional, for marinade
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
For the Sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce for sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce optional, for sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
For Cooking
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil for searing beef
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for onions
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare the marinade by whisking together soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil in a bowl.
  2. Marinate the beef strips by tossing them in the marinade, then letting them sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Cook the onions by heating 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until soft and caramelized, which takes about 8-10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then set aside.
Cooking
  1. Sear the beef by increasing the heat to high and adding 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the skillet. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned.
  2. Make the sauce by combining soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch in a bowl until smooth.
  3. Thicken the sauce by pouring the mixture over the beef in the skillet, stirring, and letting it simmer for 1-2 minutes until thickened.
  4. Combine the sautéed onions back into the pan, tossing everything together and cooking for another 30 seconds.
  5. Serve by transferring the mixture to a platter, enjoying it hot over rice or noodles.

Notes

For an even better flavor, consider using a grill pan to sear the beef. Marinating the beef longer can deepen the flavor profile. Serve with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and sliced green onions for presentation.
