Ingredients

For the casserole
  • 6 slices slices of bread (preferably brioche or challah) Use day-old bread for best results.
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups of milk Almond milk can be used for a dairy-free alternative.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Natural sweeteners can be substituted.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Feel free to experiment with other spices.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Toppings
  • Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) For topping.
  • Powdered sugar For serving.
  • Maple syrup For serving.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  3. Cut the bread into roughly 1-inch cubes and evenly distribute them in the prepared dish.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until well combined.
  5. Add the milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt to the eggs. Whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring each piece is well-soaked. Press down lightly to help absorb the liquid.
  7. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for the best texture.
Baking
  1. When ready to bake, remove the casserole from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes.
  2. Bake in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out mostly clean.
  3. Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before cutting. Serve warm with fresh berries, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
