Ingredients
  

For the filling
  • 1 lb ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or plant-based crumbles.
  • 1 small onion finely diced onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 packet taco seasoning Or 2 tablespoons homemade mix.
  • 2/3 cup tomato sauce or salsa Use your favorite heat level.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For assembly
  • 8 pieces hard taco shells Can substitute with softened corn or flour tortillas for softer tacos.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Mexican blend.
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro Optional.
  • Sour cream, guacamole, jalapeño slices, hot sauce Optional toppings.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the hard taco shells upright in a baking dish.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium. Add the ground beef and diced onion. Cook, breaking the meat up, until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Carefully drain any excess fat from the pan. Return the skillet to medium heat. Stir in the minced garlic and taco seasoning. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the tomato sauce or salsa and stir. Let the mixture simmer gently for 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Spoon the beef mixture into each taco shell and sprinkle shredded cheese on top.
Cooking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and the shells are golden.
  2. Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, red onion, and chopped cilantro as desired. Serve with optional toppings.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. To keep shells crisp, remove fresh toppings before storing. Reheat in oven at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 10 minutes.
