Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk Can substitute whole milk with almond milk for a dairy-free option
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Butter for greasing the dish
  • Powdered sugar for serving (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the cubed French bread evenly in the greased dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing gently to ensure they’re well-soaked.
  5. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight for the best results.
Baking
  1. When ready to bake, take the dish out of the refrigerator, uncover, and pop it into the oven for 30 to 40 minutes, until golden brown.
  2. Allow the casserole to rest for about 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup and a sprinkle of powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Let the bread cubes dry out a bit before soaking them in the custard to absorb more flavor. A soak of 30 minutes can work, but overnight is best. Allowing it to cool slightly after baking makes slicing easier.
