Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 loaf French or challah bread (day-old or slightly stale) Using day-old bread helps absorb custard without getting mushy.
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (whole milk preferred; swap for almond or oat milk if dairy-free)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream for dairy-free)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (brown sugar adds warmth)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries (frozen can work) Fresh blueberries provide the best flavor.
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish Generously butter the baking dish to prevent sticking.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven and generously butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the loaf into 1 to 1.5-inch cubes and spread half in the dish. Scatter half of the blueberries over this layer.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth.
  4. Pour half of this custard mixture over the first layer of bread and press it gently down.
  5. Add the remaining bread cubes and blueberries, then pour the rest of the custard on top. Lightly press down to ensure it soaks in.
  6. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Baking
  1. In the morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Remove the plastic wrap and bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, until puffed and golden.
  3. Allow it to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
