Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Break it up and cook until fully browned, about 6 to 8 minutes.
- Add the diced onion and continue cooking until softened, about 3 to 4 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and optional spices.
- Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
- Stir in the cream of mushroom soup and sour cream until the mixture is smooth. Heat through for about 2 to 3 minutes.
Assembly and Cooking
- Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish and spread the beef mixture evenly across the bottom.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
- Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the cheese.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the tater tots turn golden brown and the edges are bubbling.
- Carefully remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheese on top.
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, just until the cheese melts and is bubbly.
- Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
